Second Skin A/W 2024

The first research I did began by exploring the relationship between the inner and the outer. This led me to doubt and wonder, is the outer always superficial? Is it a selective showcase of oneself as well as a protective layer of a facade to not be vulnerable? Inspired by Designer DingYun Zhang and his collaboration with Moncler, a collection of puffer jackets with multiple holes. I felt a wave of excitement yet pressured as if something just clicked inside my head. The holes felt like the public’s gaze towards me yet it can be viewed the other way, as the one who looks through the holes as a window to see what’s under.
My initial research began by looking at the direct influences of what second skin is and what it can be. Due to a lack of self-identity as a designer, I wanted to put my own personal issue towards my work and create what I experience and visualise in my head. My main thought process is a sense of connection between what others view me as and who I truly am behind a facade.

My aim for my final year project is to obtain my identity. Through experimenting with different styles, silhouettes, and colours and creating sketches from collages; I gained an insight into who I am, who I want to become and what kind of designer am I. The direction I went with is to use my work to convey to the public who I am, with the usage of colours and silhouettes; with the outer being bright and
colourful like most animals as a defence mechanism and vibrant coloured fruits, fungi are 80% of the time not safe to consume; as for the inner which lies my identity, is still cloudy and boring, thus it being just a human suit in Blue.
